Most Idyllic Restaurants in Provence
Exploring Provence through its dining unveils a region where tradition and local flavours are brought together in refined but heartfelt dishes. These five restaurants highlight Provençal flavours rooted in the seasons, each offering a genuine connection with the land.
1: La Bastide, Capelongue Hotel
Set amidst the Provençal countryside, on the hillsides of the Luberon Massif overlooking the church tower and the rooftops of Bonnieux, La Bastide at Hotel Capelongue serves dishes inspired by nature and crafted from the freshest local produce. Here, the philosophy is simple yet profound: from the earth straight to your plate. Every meal is a celebration of the region’s rich flavours, reflecting the harmony between the land and the table in a peaceful, green haven under the shade of the pine trees.
2: Château des Alpilles

In the idyllic and tranquil landscape just at the foot of the Alpilles mountain range, Château des Alpilles stands in the middle of a beautiful property just outside Saint-Rémy, embraced by a fresh and fragrant garden. The elegant estate, with the château providing a stately backdrop, is a serene and private setting for both guests of the hotel and external diners. On a beautiful sunny day, whether by the pool, on the terrace in front of the Château, you will be able to enjoy a light and aromatic menu that perfectly complements the surroundings, making it a perfect escape for a few hours of pure relaxation.
3: La Bastide de Marie
Near Ménerbes, La Bastide de Marie is surrounded by vineyards, with its own winery, and a rural manor transformed into a hotel. I had the pleasure of going here for lunch on a beautiful summer afternoon, and sitting on the terrace overlooking the vineyards was simply enchanting. The lunch matched the exquisite setting, showcasing the region’s vibrant flavours and pairing beautifully with a thoughtfully selected range of white wines.
4: La Chassagnette

For both lunch and dinner, La Chassagnette invites you to a richly flavoured journey through a six-course tasting menu. The restaurant’s charm lies in its lush and rich flower and vegetable garden, nourished by the unique soil of the margins of the Rhône River. It is from this garden that all the produce used in the making of the menu comes, and you could not get any more direct farm-to-table than this. With a deep respect for the seasons, La Chassagnette celebrates the bounty of its lush garden, which blooms abundantly throughout the year, offering fresh, vibrant ingredients.
5: La Mirande
Near the Pope's Palace in Avignon, the restaurant at Hôtel La Mirande is one of the city’s most celebrated, offering just a handful of tables on its terrace, creating an intimate and refined atmosphere. You can select a 4, 6, or 8-course menu, and I opted for the shortest of them all, but not short on entrées, main and intermediate courses that truly captured the essence of Provençal aromas and flavours, presenting a delightful tribute to the region’s culinary heritage. These were probably the best couple of hours I spent in Avignon!
